What is the difference between a library search tool (ex: OneSearch) and a search engine (ex: Google)?

Answer

Library search tools (ex: OneSearch, databases) are designed for college-level research. They search collections of subscription-based resources such as books, ebooks, articles, media, and more. Library tools cover a wide range of subjects and topics and searches can be customized using a variety of filters/limiters. These search tools are free for UC students, faculty, and staff which is why you have to login with your UC username/password and DUO to access the content.

Search engines (ex: Google) contain a lot of information but only cover a portion of the internet. You can find information about groups and organizations, problem solve, and find personal web pages. Search engines are freely searchable and no login is required. Some content is free while other sources may ask you to pay or subscribe before you can see the full content--this is called a paywall.
